so sad...

... to hear about the fatal plane crash on friday that killed four people and almost killed DJ AM and Travis Barker. What a miracle that they both survived. Such tragedies always serve as reminders to treasure each and every day for what it brings you, to not sweat the small stuff and to relish all these beautiful moments with my gorgeous family.

Pit in my stomach, lump in my throat...

Sometimes, life sucks.

My Top 10 Current obsessions...

1. Bravo TV shows: Project Runway, Top Design, Million Dollar Listing, Jo and Slade: Date my Ex, Flipping Out, The Rachel Zoe Project... You name it, I watch it AND love it!

2. Artichoke: Peel, dip, eat. Yum. Healthy decadence.

3. sTori Telling, by Tori Spelling: New. Found. Respect. What a woman!

4. Cookie magazine: High-end lifestyle for the Mommy set. My magazine de jour.

5. American politics: Current inner struggle--If I'm Republican, I'm racist and if I'm Democratic, I'm sexist... but seriously, I'm no longer so absolutely certain which is the winning ticket.

6. Sancerre: Ice cold. The perfect anecdote to a long day.

7. The ocean: Nothing is a better reminder of how lucky I am to live where I do.

8. Giada de Laurentis: Simple, tasty home cooking. This is my new go-to book for dinner-time inspiration.

9. My new iPhone: Email, NY Times, AP Wire, Facebook and phone on the go. Amazing!

10. My children, of course: Asher and Lola are my life and raison d'etre. I feel so blessed to be their mother and have their sweet souls in my life.

A South Beach Soiree: Girls Gone Not-So Wild

Having lived all over the place and made friends in each port, I am always finding myself missing someone. Travelling to see friends used to be a fantastic way to take advantage of a great last-minute flight deal but these days, with child and hubby thrown into the mix it is simply no longer feasible—London for the weekend with toddler in tow isn’t an enticing prospect no matter which way you look at it.

So, instead, I rely on my friends wanting to see me and purchasing the necessary plane tickets to South Florida. (Of course, the great climate, private pool and close proximity to the beach are an additional enticer!) Thank goodness, it is rare for more than a couple of months to pass without the descent of a very friendly face. And praise the L-rd, I have a husband who understands our necessity of a spare room.

Recently, two of my oldest and dearest girlfriends, Lauren and Natalie, arrived at Casa Shapiro to celebrate Lauren’s 30th birthday. Now, I have always been a bit of a home-body but these days, more than ever, a good night with friends translates to a delicious at-home supper accompanied by dear friends and washed down with gorgeous wines... oh, and bed by midnight (at the latest) if I can politely get away with it!

But as wonderful as that is, and there were sure to be plenty of such evenings in the mix, it just wasn’t going to cut it for this friend’s birthday. I was determined to dust off my dancing shoes and plan a night to remember...

Getting Ready for Baby

Hard to believe, but in two weeks’ time I will be a mother of two and I am now in the throes of getting ready for baby. With this being the second time around, I am a slightly more discerning consumer of baby goods than I was two years ago when every baby gadget seemed to scream “YOU NEED ME.” However, that this forthcoming arrival is a girl has thrown a whole new dilemma my way: resisting all those incredible pink outfits! Be that as it may, here I have my current list of must-haves with a few frivolities (read: great gift ideas) thrown in for good measure.

Getting Buggy with it
Inline Vibe by Phil & Teds: RRP $740
www.philandteds.com

If there is a buggy out there that you might consider calling “sexy,” this is the one.
Phil & Teds inline buggies have received great acclaim for their innovative inline functionality, and now the Vibe model lends the brand a super-stylish flair. The key to success behind Phil & Teds’ buggies is their unique double kit. The add-on attaches to the front or back of your buggy, allowing two children (aged newborn to four-years-old) to ride ‘in line’ with one another. For self-professed klutz’s such as myself, this is a huge selling point as the double buggy is barely larger than a single. What’s more, the buggy is easy to assemble and easy to keep clean thanks to wipe-down fabrics. I can’t wait to get this piece of kit out on the roads!

Carrier
M1 by Lascal: RRP $129
http://www.lascal.se/

There’s nothing like feeling your newborn baby against your body. Lascal’s new M1 carrier offers a secure and perfect fit for newborns whilst being strong enough to support an older toddler (up to 30lbs). What’s more, the carrier is made from a super soft, naturally antibacterial Bamboo fabric, which helps prevent irritation.

A beautiful nursery
Custom bedding: Accessories starting at $24, Sets starting at $490
www.monarch-creations.com

There is something so wonderful about putting together the room that will soon be inhabited by your newborn—picking out colour schemes, fabrics and themes. Of course, you want to make it as special as possible. Tracy at Monarch Creations makes the most beautiful handmade crib bedding and nursery accessories you could imagine. From ethereal toiles to funkier polk-a-dots, there is something for everyone’s taste and Tracy is more than happy to work with the individual customer. The accessories, including toy bags and diaper stackers, make beautiful baby gifts, too.

Hi-Tech
SoundSleep for Babies: RRP $24.95
www.soundscience.us

This is, apparently, the “most accurate womb simulation CD on the market” that gets babies into a deep sleep within minutes. The soundtrack was tested over several years in homes, daycares and hospital NICUs and all reports and testimonials confirmed this CDs ability to make a remarkable difference in an infant’s sleep help. Perhaps it is just weird science, but count me in if it means I get some sleep!

Layette
Totitude: RRP $30-60
www.totitude.com

Frills and dresses might be nice to look at but they can’t be comfortable for a newborn to loll around in. However, with all these guests coming by to check out your new addition, you want to make sure she dazzles. I am currently smitten with Totitude’s collection of infant and children’s loungewear—the onesies and tank-top sets bejewelled with your favourite children’s characters are nothing short of adorable, whilst being funky to boot. What’s more, owner Terri Schneiderman, will gladly accommodate custom orders for baby/ sibling gifts, such as the pink bodysuit Asher will be giving his new little sister upon her arrival, which proudly claims her as “Asher’s Little Sis.” For enquiries, email tcasler1@aol.com.

Diaper Bag
Skip*Hop Duo Deluxe: RRP $54
www.skiphop.com

This is one of the best diaper bags on the market. With it’s many pockets and compartments, the Skip Hop Duo helps to keep even the most dishevelled amongst us organised. The bag’s Shuttle Clips give the bag great versatility—allowing it to either attach to the handlebars of your stroller, or convert into a trend-conscious shoulder bag. What’s more, there is enough room in here for two children’s worth of product!

Memory Maker
Ticche & Bea Baby Clothes Quilt Kit: RRP $35
www.ticcheandbea.com

This is currently one of my favourite baby gifts for the parents who have everything! The baby quilt kit provides the ideal way to preserve some of the treasured pieces from your baby’s first-year closet. The kit contains everything you will need to make the quilt—minus your child’s clothing, of course—minky fabric for alternating squares, batting, a quilt back, safety pins, straight pins, a cutting template and easy-to-follow directions. What’s more, if you don’ have the inclination to sew this quilt yourself, simply send the kit back with your squares of baby clothes and for an additional $30 someone will sew the quilt for you.

Clean Air
Vicks GermFree Humidifier
www.vicks.com

This warm-mist humidifier kills up to 99.999% of germs, mould and bacteria in the water, which generates a healing mist for the stuffy moments you and yours will inevitably succumb to. I plugged this in upon the first signs of Asher’s recent runny nose and within 24 hours the cold was gone. No drugs required.

Baby—and a Bunch of Excess Weight—on Board

My brief hiatus from the pages of Beauty and the Dirt has come to an end and I am overjoyed to announce the birth of Miss Lola Bette Shapiro who entered this world on April 29th. Trouble is, Lola’s petite 7lb 13oz debut has left me with a larger, far less joyous and most un-cute bundle, AKA the 30 pounds I now have to lose. What’s more, my newfound status as “mother of two” has given me a great desire to take care of myself and restore my sense of Hannah. (Of course, the plethora of South-Florida hot bods surrounding me help keep my resolution in check and remind me of just how dumpy I am in my post-partum state.)

So here I stand, determined to be thin once more and I will rest at nothing in my quest to achieve outer beauty. But before I resort to lipo, tummy tucks and boob jobs, I am willing to look into the other tricks of the trade I have to hand.

No sooner had I committed myself to my beautifying mission, I was invited over to visit Krystina Ta, owner of Spataneous (www.spataneousonline.com) and self-titled Queen of Eyebrows—South Florida’s answer to brow guru Anastasia. But she doesn’t rest there. She's also the expert on current trends including eyelash extensions and permanent make-up. Ta offers everything here at Spataneous, from nail treatments to spray tanning, and waxing to massage. Not to mention, the prices are reasonable.

Ta’s new salon should be a wakeup call to the other nail salons and day spas here in South Florida, where service is far from the name of the game. Upon walking in to Spataneous you instantly feel like you are in for a treat as you are greeted with a smile, offered a cup of tea or a glass of wine and escorted to your treatment of choice.

Since the name of my game is to not only beautify but also make myself look slimmer whilst I lose poundage, I opted for an eyebrow shaping (perhaps it would give the impression of a slimmer face) and a spray tan (we all know the slimming optical illusion of a bronzed glow).

When I get my eyebrows shaped, it always amazes me that such a small procedure can make such a difference to the appearance of your face. I’m not sure that a good brow job makes me look thinner but it does make me feel prettier and that’s no mean feat in post-partum land. Ta certainly knows what she is doing in this arena and strives to give her customer the best shape for her face, which she no doubt achieved in this instance.

Then, onto the spray tan. Ta employs a unique "green” airbrush tanning product that is 100% organic, made with all natural materials and is FDA-approved. I was unbelievably impressed with the results and though she didn’t have the equipment to give me a fake six-pack, I left the salon feeling bronzed, beautiful, and as though I had faked a five-pound weight loss. (Hurrah!)

I now feel sufficiently armed to take on that thirty in style.

Until next time,
Hannah xo

Spataneous is offering all new clients a 15% discount on services through the month of August so if you are in South Florida, be sure to stop by.

Banishing the Post-Baby Bulge

I don’t know about you but as soon as I saw that little blue line on the pregnancy test (which I then confirmed with the new, digital kind that spells out—loud and clear—that you’re “PREGNANT”), I began planning for the bun in my oven’s arrival. I registered (at babiesrus.com and giggle.com); I scoured children’s clothing websites (bestandcompany.com and janieandjack.com are my current faves) for beautiful layette pieces and I began taking an unhealthy obsession with the perfect shade of pink and the ideal fabric print for my baby girl’s nursery (www.monarch-creations.com’s nursery rhyme toile).

Once Lola made her debut my cup ranneth over with joy. Sure, I had that mixed-up, crazy-lady post-partum feeling but I only had to take a look at my delicious, newborn daughter or my son “holding” his new sister for that feeling to instantly dissipate. That is, of course, until the adrenaline wore off and I was left looking at a body that, quite frankly, bears very little resemblance to my pre-baby shape. Of course, I understand that mine is an extreme case. Whilst pregnant with my son I gained 70 pounds, which, I might add, I quickly lost (plus some bonus poundage), and I gained 55 pounds with my daughter. But today, four and a half months since Lola’s arrival, I still have 25 pounds to purge and I am adamant that I will achieve this goal pre-February and the big 3-0.

That’s great. But, let’s face it: with two small children who seemingly take it in turns to sleep through the night, I’m exhausted. During the day, I am running my errands and trying to work… when, pray tell, do I have time to get to the gym?

Thankfully, I have a slew of experts at my fingertips. For this challenge, I really need someone dedicated and hardcore. Enter, Kristal Richardson, professional figure competitor and personal trainer. Just looking at Kristal’s abs makes you realize this girl is a pro, means business and knows what she’s talking about. So, I kicked my saggy, shameful bottom into gear and asked Kristal for her insight into how to banish the baby bulge.

Kristal on Nutrition:
The knee-jerk reaction that most people have when they want to lose weight is “Oh, I have to stop eating – I must starve myself!” This couldn’t be more wrong. In fact, it’s the opposite. Each day, you need to eat four to six smaller meals comprised of lean protein, complex carbohydrates, fruits, veggies, and low fat dairy. By eating multiple times a day, you are allowing your metabolism to run efficiently which, in turn, makes your body act like a fat-burning furnace.

On a typical day, I would have a breakfast of three egg whites, and ½ cup of porridge with ¼ cup of blueberries. Mid-morning, I snack on 1 cup of nonfat yogurt with 12 almonds. Another great snack is 2 salt-free rice cakes with 1 tablespoon of an all-natural nut butter. For lunch, I have 4 oz. grilled chicken, tuna, or turkey on a whole-wheat tortilla wrap with lettuce, tomato, and mustard. I also have a small side salad with 1 tbsp olive oil and vinegar, which helps to fill me up. Mid-afternoon, I munch on a medium green apple and a low-fat string cheese. Then, for dinner I suggest 4 oz. salmon (or other fish), or lean beef or pork, 1 cup green veggie, and a small side salad with 1 tbsp olive oil and vinegar. In the evening, if I fancy something sweet, I have a sugar free Jell-O or pudding, and a cup of green tea.

Kristal’s Nutrition Mantra? When getting back to your pre-baby weight, use nutrition as your friend, not your enemy.

Kristal on Exercise:
In addition to proper nutrition, you need a solid exercise plan. Try to find 30-45 minutes a day, 4-5 days a week, that you can dedicate to exercise. Being that you just had a baby, time is limited so here is a sample exercise plan you can perform at home while the baby is napping. All you need is a jump rope, medicine ball, resistance bands, and sneakers!

Kristal’s At-Home Exercise Plan:
Monday, Wednesday, Friday:
Jump rope for 2 minutes
Pushups 20
Crunches 20
Pop squats 20
Alternating lunges 10 each leg
Bicep Curls with resistance bands 20
Tricep dips (use a coffee table)
Overhead shoulder press with medicine ball
Jump rope 2 mins
Rest and repeat circuit three times.
When doing this circuit, keep moving. The idea is to keep your heart rate up. Also, concentrate on contracting the muscles and holding in your core.

Tues, and Thurs.
30 min brisk walk with baby in the stroller

Kristal’s Top Tips:
Again, eat 4-6 small meals a day
Drink about a gallon of water a day
Take a multi vitamin
Give yourself a good cheat meal once a week

On paper, this all seems perfectly doable but only time will tell if I can maintain the motivation and get back the body I know is lurking around here somewhere.

How Hannah Got Her Grove Back

One of the best things about living here in South Florida is the weather. But, with two young children, it is hard to make the most of it. Yet, while it’s hard to get away from it all for a few days there are plenty of beautiful hotels with day spas, which are wonderful for a girls’ or couples’ day away from the kids. Nothing leaves me happier to come home to a toy-strewn house than a day—sans children—of rest, relaxation and sunshine.

One of my most adored places in Florida to sojourn is Grove Isle Hotel and Spa located on a private island in Coconut Grove. I jump at each and every opportunity to spend time here. When I’m feeling frazzled, got the blues or I just feel like a few hours to myself, this is where I head and I feel my shoulders lighten as soon as I step out of my car and into the cloud of bougainvillea and heady coconut-mango aroma that engulfs the resort.

Recently, my friend Jenny and I headed down to Grove Isle for a post-partum (mine, not hers—she was having a Yum Mum indulgence) day retreat. We headed straight to Spa Terre where we threw on our suits and jumped straight into the Watsu massage pool—one of just eight in the US. Aaaah… just thinking about it even now, all these weeks later, makes me relax a little. The serenely therapeutic pool overlooks the ocean and—I joke not—you could seriously whittle away a few hours out there just watching the boats pass by and lost in your own thoughts. We, however, did it chit-chatting. (Any and all of the above options is terrific.)

Once we had washed a little of our stress away, Jenny and I headed back into the Spa for our services. The therapists at Spa Terre are expert in numerous exotic Balinese spa treatments and Thai body rituals, as well as the quintessential spa therapies. Though I typically go for a classic deep-tissue massage, on this particular day I opted for a hot stone treatment that left me feeling utterly chilled out (which my husband was grateful for, when I arrived home later that day. The post-spa bottle of Sancerre no doubt also helped).

Following the spa, we headed over to Baleen for lunch and a table overlooking Biscayne Bay. The fusion food here is both fresh and absolutely delicious. The shrimp cocktail is fantastic—I don’t know where they get them, but the shrimp at Baleen are consistently the biggest I have ever seen. However, they are not only large but perfectly steamed and always a great choice. Another personal fave is the Cane Sugar Blackened Salmon, which is an ideal post-spa dish—full of classic, aromatic and clean Thai flavours. And I never go wrong with their Greek salad. For dessert, I can’t resist the sorbet, which is homemade, showcases locally inspired flavours—such as pink grapefruit and blood orange—and is always the perfect ending to the meal.

Beware, the service at Baleen is slow. But who cares when you have nothing to rush for and you can take your time enjoying good food, lovely wine and an amazing view. Throw a fab friend and great conversation into the mix and you find yourself pretty close to perfection on the Day Out rating scale.

Before we knew it, it was time for Jenny and I to get back in the car and drive home to reality. But we did so with a skip in our step and smiles on our faces.

Remember, dear reader—if you are fortunate enough to have more than a few hours to get away, Grove Isle also offers a one-of-a-kind resort. The hotel has just 49 guest rooms, which iron canopied beds, terra cotta tile, original artwork, and spacious balconies with stunning views of Biscayne Bay and the edged shoreline of Miami. It is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway.
